the farm Chris Batstone Susi Batstone the herd
I came to enjoy dairy farming 15 years ago, having spent all my spare time
until then looking after horses. Apart from a brief introduction to farming
when I was 18, my career had been as a Civil Servant, then a year was spent
training as a farm secretary. More administration work followed with a local
veterinary business, then Devon County Council.
Since the arrival of our children, eleven years ago, I have concentrated on helping to keep the farm running. I get to fill in most of the paperwork, but also have responsibility for all the calves, young heifers and I often do some of the milkings. I particularly enjoy caring for the newly calved cows and their calves. For the last five years I have been practising the use of homoeopathy on the family and our animals, and have gained confidence in the management of normal day to day health problems.
I have now qualified with Food Hygiene and Hazard Analysis, and am enjoying
designing forms for everybody else to fill in! I help in the processing room
and am often the initial point of contact many customers have
with the dairy.
