A healthy soil is the foundation of organic farming. Lady Eve Balfour and
her colleagues (the founders of the Soil Association) identified the link
between healthy soil and
the health of those fed by it. Our soil, now free of harmful chemicals, provides
better quality feed for our healthier stock. The ultimate benefit of organic
milk is that it no longer contains any questionable chemical residues which
could otherwise be consumed by people.
A healthy soil recycles waste products and by doing so,
re-generates sufficient fertility to grow the next season's crops. Farmers
are only temporary custodians of the
land and have a responsibility to future generations to keep the land productive.
Modern farming methods which use artificial nutrients to force growth and
destroy any competitor plant or feeding insect will eventually leave a barren
soil not capable of supporting life above or below ground. Sustainability
is not just about next year's crops.
