Because West Hill Farm cows spend a large amount of the year grazing grass, typically mid February to the end of November, and will eat conserved grass when housed in the winter, our milk has high levels of various substances collectively known as nutraceuticals. These have been shown to be beneficial to human health. English law discourages advertising these facts as any claim of a positive impact on health on the label of the milk would mean that it cannot be sold as a foodstuff but rather as a medicine! Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is one of these.

CLA is thought to be very important to good health. Various medical trials including one currently under way at Southampton University are investigating the benefits to the immune system of a diet with good levels of CLA. Other research has concluded that it has cancer fighting properties. The Dairy Council Web site at www.milk.co.uk has copies of the medical papers.
